SUMMER SCHOOL 2024 |
HEKLER | 4 WATERS
In July I had the great pleasure of sharing thoughts, insights and doubts about my artistic practice with the participants of the second edition of the Hekler’s Four Waters Summer School. The focus was on a selection of recent projects with photography, writing and archives as well as on engagement with collectives Footnote Centre for Image and Text and Jednostavno rečeno group.
This presentation focuses on the specific examples of Czech, Polish, Soviet, and Yugoslav interwar avant-garde poetry books, all illustrated by photomontages or diverse techniques involving photographic material. I trace different artistic practices—such as staged photography, the use of documentary footage, photo-factography, along with the typography, photo- and page-montage—employed by the avant-garde cine-poetry to endow the verbal-visual representation with a performative quality and engender active production of experience. This project proposes to establish the cinepoetry book as a specific hybrid and collaborative cross-over genre between literature and visual culture, and a sort of visual, if not visionary, technology for the aesthetic-ideological-socio-political imaginary production and circulation.
